Zoos

A Zoo used to be a series of cages displaying animals in rather poor conditions. Over the last century or so zoos have been changing enormously. A good modern zoo or wildlife park is actively involved with the conservation and breeding of threatened animals and are also important educational resources. This should apply to privately run as well as to publicly owned zoos.

Quite often nowadays the distinction between a zoo and a wildlife park has become a little blurred. A visit to a zoo or wildlife park should be educational.

Hobart does no longer has an official zoo. Hobart Zoo closed in 1937.

Here is a picture of a young male Thylacine at Hobart Zoo taken by B Sheppard in 1928. The animal died of pneumonia the day after the picture was taken.
